A proper country pub

Good beer, good food, good company

The Windmill is an independent Sussex country pub with plenty of character, a proper bar and the sort of relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than you intended. At its heart, The Windmill is still a pub in the traditional sense. Come in for a pint of Harvey's or a local guest ale, meet friends at the bar, play darts, sit beside the fire in winter or find a table outside when the sun comes out. Dogs, muddy boots, families and walkers are all part of the place, and there is no need to be eating to feel at home. Our kitchen cooks with care — local produce and suppliers where we can, seasonal plates prepared properly. You'll find comforting pub classics alongside smarter dishes: from fish and chips or a ploughman's to pan-roasted haddock, terrines and seasonal salads. Generous, well-cooked food in a proper freehouse, not a formal restaurant. Outside is a real selling point: two beer gardens looking onto open fields, plus The Lodge — covered outdoor seating with heaters — and Charlie's Hut when you want to sit out. With comfortable bedrooms too, it is an ideal base for exploring rural Sussex or simply disappearing to the country for a night. The Windmill is something increasingly difficult to find: a genuinely welcoming English country pub, full of personality, where good food, good beer and good company all matter equally.
